The assignment was a winter shoot of a magnificent country manor, cocooned in the tranquillity of Dartmoor. The task at hand was to capture the soul of the property, hidden behind heavy drapes designed to keep the warmth in. The inside of the manor was to be the focus during this winter visit, with plans for a return to capture the external beauty when the weather turned milder.
Embracing the Challenges
The diversity of lighting conditions within the manor presented a unique challenge. Some rooms were shrouded in darkness, while others embraced the natural light pouring in through large, open windows. Balancing these extremes, especially when adding artificial light, required meticulous planning and execution. Heavy drapes, although excellent for insulation, created a dramatic interplay of light and shadow, adding depth and character but making it trickier to capture the perfect shot.
